Pet Ofrenda: What to Put on It and What Each Item Means
What goes on a Día de Muertos altar for pets, the meaning of each item, and how to make a simple one at home, step by step, with ideas for dogs and cats.
An ofrenda for pets is a way of telling them we have not forgotten them. By popular tradition in Mexico, the pets who have passed come home on October 27, and the ofrenda is what welcomes them: their photo, their food, their water and the light that shows them the way.
You do not need a large or expensive altar. What matters is that it holds things that were theirs and that you make it with love. Here is what goes on it, what each item means, and how to make a simple one.
What goes on a pet ofrenda
| Item | What it means |
|---|---|
| Their photo | Remembering them just as they were, and showing them the place is theirs |
| A candle | Its light guides them back home |
| Cempasúchil marigolds | Their color and scent mark the way |
| A bowl of water | So they can rest and drink after the journey |
| Their favorite food | Kibble, treats or whatever they loved most |
| Their toy | The ball, plush or bone that was only theirs |
| Their collar, leash or blanket | Something that carries their scent and memory |
| Papel picado | The joy of the celebration and the wind that brings the souls |
| Salt | Purifies and protects the soul's path |
| Incense or copal | Cleanses the space and scents it to welcome them |
You do not need all of it. Their photo, a candle, water and something of theirs already make a complete ofrenda.
What each item means
Their photo
It is the heart of the altar. Choose a photo that shows them as you remember them: playing, asleep in their spot, or looking at the camera. If more than one pet has passed, you can put a photo of each.
The candle
The candle's light shows them the way back. Many families light it on the night of October 26 or the morning of the 27th. For the dates in detail, read our guide on when pets arrive and leave.
Cempasúchil marigolds
The cempasúchil is the flower of Día de Muertos. Its orange color and strong scent help the souls find their way. You can put a few flowers in a glass, or make a small path of petals from the door to the altar.
Water and food
The water is so they can rest after the long journey. The food is their favorite: their kibble, a treat, a piece of chicken or whatever they always begged you for. Serve it in their own bowl if you still have it.
Their things
Their toy, collar or blanket tells them this is still their home. They are also what reminds us of them most.
How to make a simple ofrenda, step by step
- Choose the spot. A small table, a shelf, or a corner where they liked to be.
- Cover the base with a tablecloth, a colorful fabric or papel picado.
- Put their photo in the center, a little raised, for example on a covered box.
- Place the candle in front of the photo, in a glass jar and away from curtains.
- Add water and their food in their bowls.
- Add their things: the toy, collar or blanket.
- Decorate with marigolds and, if you like, a path of petals to the door.
- Write their name on a piece of paper or a card and set it by their photo.
Not sure what to write on the card? We gathered quotes for a pet who has passed, short ones and lines for dogs and cats.
Pet ofrenda ideas
- Mini altar: a covered shoebox or a small tray with their photo, a candle and a few flowers. Great if you are short on space.
- An altar in their spot: set it where they used to sleep or wait for you.
- For dogs: their favorite bone, their leash and a few treats.
- For cats: their toy mouse, a little tuna and their blanket.
- A sugar skull with their name: decorate a sugar or paper skull with their name.
- A shared ofrenda: if your family sets the big ofrenda on November 1 and 2, leave a space for your pets.
Safety if you have other pets at home
If other dogs or cats live with you, put the ofrenda where they cannot reach it:
- Keep chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion and pan de muerto out of reach: they are toxic to dogs and cats.
- Candles should be in a glass jar, away from tails and paws. An electric candle is safer.
- Marigolds are not among the most dangerous plants, but they can upset your pet's stomach if eaten.
A memory that moves
Next to their photo, you can add a video of your pet made from a single photo: coming to life on your ofrenda among candles and flowers, crossing a marigold bridge, or back in their favorite spot, with their name written in the video. It is ready in 2–5 minutes and you can play it on your phone next to their photo.
